THE NIGHT THOREAU SPENT IN JAIL will receive a staged reading at Cyrano’s. The story follows the refusal by a 29-year-old Henry David Thoreau, the American philosopher, essayist, poet, mystic, and naturalist - a real flesh and blood person who refused to pay his taxes because he was opposed to the war against Mexico and slavery in the mid-1840s. This was the most famous act of civil disobedience in American history because of Thoreau's brief essay Civil Disobedience, which had profound political influence on Mohandas Gandhi, Leo Tolstoy and Martin Luther King. A big thank you to Visit Anchorage for the ice sculpture in Town Square honoring milestone anniversaries of the Opera's 50th, the Alaska Junior Theatre’s 30th and Cyrano’s 20th anniversary seasons. It's the comedy/tragedy masks with a huge very theatrical figure pointing to them.
The Alaska State Council on the Art conference was invaluable and I learned a great deal as well as networked with old colleagues and met new ones. One of my favorite moments was when keynote speaker Ben Cameron mentioned the "Late Great Jerry Harper." While the electric and brilliant Ben C. was the executive director of Theatre Communications Group (TCG) he visited Alaska and we got to know him. The production at that time was LAKE HOLLYWOOD, which featured Jerry and Liz and was directed by David.
Join Cyrano's Theatre Company for an afternoon open house, Saturday, Feb. 11. We'll host the current TCG Executive, Teresa Erlying, and celebrate Cyrano's 20th year, as well as honor the vibrant Anchorage Theatre community. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
See you at the theatre!
